The library is located
on the western side of the main CPSP building. There are two huge
reading halls with a total capacity of 300 individual readers for
study. The library provides a centrally air-conditioned, fully carpeted,
congenial and scholarly environment, conducive to research.

Since its inception,
valuable collection of medical books are being developed on regular
basis and now collection consists of:

8,900
• Journals: 5,400 volumes on various subjects of medical &
health sciences.
• Subscribed Journal: over 50.
• Dissertations: over 5,000 (submitted by trainees of FCPS
Part - II).
• Audio Visual Material: over 2,045, consist of CDs, Slides,
Video and Audio Tapes

The library provides
bibliographical services for checking and correcting citation of

is provided in the library for coping the required material from
various journals/books and other material.

Timing
To accommodate maximum
number of researchers, CPSP keeps the library open from 8:30 A.M.
to 12:00 midnight (without break) and on Sundays and public holidays
from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. under the supervision of competent and
qualified staff.
Membership
Membership fee is
a nominal monthly for all the doctors who are pursuing various courses
or appearing in the examinations of CPSP. If seats are available,
other medical graduates enrolled with PMDC are also welcome to become
a member of CPSP Library.

facility exists with the following libraries:

• Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Library, Karachi.
• Sharing WHO/EMR for Inter-Library Loan (ILL) services within
the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
IRC (Internet
Research Centre)
Recent technological
development imparts new dimensions and enhanced new role for libraries
and librarians. To meet the demand of the new technology, CPSP Library
enhanced its activities to provide electronic resources of knowledge.
CPSP Library has
established an Internet Research Center (IRC) to facilitate the
researching students and all its users. IRC has state of-the-art
technology at the disposal of the user for their research work.
All workstations have a processing speed of 1.8GHz and with 128
MB RAM and 40GB Hard Disk. To enable the researchers to print relevant
material or/and copy material to a CD or to their own USB Drive
the IRC is equipped with a Laser Printer and a CD Writer. CPSP is
recieving a 1 MB internet bandwidth which is used by the IRC users
in their research work and allows high speed browsing and downloading
of research topics.
The facility includes
the provision of printing and copying of CDs of research material.
This service is open to all Fellows, Members and Trainees of FCPS
and MCPS/DCPS.
The IRC has been established in CPSP Head Office at Karachi and
all other CPSP regional centers. Department of Information Technology
of CPSP takes care of the backup and support services to this important
resource of knowledge.
Opening Hours
The IRC is open six
days a week. The official working hours of the IRC are from 8:00
am till 5:00 pm – Monday through Saturday.

Medline Facilities
To keep pace with
modern technological advances, the library has established a Computer
Section with seven CD-ROM Databases. CD-ROM MEDLINE Disks (Compact
Disk Read Only Memory Medical Literature On-Line) from 1966 to-date
have been acquired with subscriptions for monthly updates. MEDLINE
covers more than 4,600 medical journals published throughout the
world in various languages. The information provided in MEDLIBE
includes complete bibliographical details about the articles in
English and other languages. This technology enables researchers
to search and retrieve information in seconds and reprint the same.
Full text databases Compact Library 1986-1993 and ExtraMed 1995-1998
also available in the library.
Electronic
Document Delivery Services
CPSP library provides
information in-house collection and also from the materials available
at different institutions through e-mail too. CPSP library is part
of Union Catalogue of EMRO Health Science Journals and shares its
resources to other Eastern Mediterranean Regional libraries through
Ariel software.
National
Depository Library of WHO
The World Health Organization
has officially designated the library of College of Physicians &
Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) as a depository library for WHO publications
in Pakistan. A separate space has been allocated for this purpose
and all the WHO publications are available for all visitors registered
or un-registered. This library serves as reference source for those
interested to consult WHO publications.
