Computing Environment:

The Department of IT has computerized all departments at the College and its Regional Centers. Desktop computer workstations have been provided to every user in all the departments. The employees have at their disposal, state-of-the-art computer hardware which includes branded P-IV machines having minimum 256 MB memory and 80 GB Hard Disk drives. Latest printers and Digital photocopy machines are also available to ensure high speed printing and photocopying. The Karachi Head Office has a 1 GB Fiber Optic backbone interconnectivity between all departments and the Network Operations Center.

Department of IT is making use of emerging web technologies as well and has a section on “Online Directories” on the CPSP website. The CPSP website is enhancing electronic services tremendously. The website currently hosts the Journal of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (JCPSP), the Bulletin, online directories (such as Index of Dissertations, Medlip, Fellows Directory), notifications, an entire section related with the Examination activities, calendar of events and a host of other information provided for the benefit of the visitors seeking information about the College. The CPSP website is one of the most popular websites on the Internet and is ranked amongst the most visited websites on the Web. The CPSP website aims at enabling creativity, communication and collaboration, providing learning material to learners and teachers, administrators and all who are related to the healthcare profession.

The CPSP is receiving a 1 MB Internet bandwidth as being a member institute of the Pakistan Education and Research Network. In addition to this linkage, the CPSP is also receiving a 3 MB Internet bandwidth through the PakSAT-1 Satellite using VSAT technology. The Satellite link is available at CPSP Karachi and the Regional Centers at Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan and Faisalabad. The trainees and researchers avail the high speed Internet bandwidth to search, browse and download articles and other topics of interest at a very high speed.

Being a member institute of PERN, the CPSP has access to the HEC Digital Library program, through which, over 12,000 journals are available for full free acesss to the users of the College. This facility is available for use at the Internet Research Centers established in Karachi and Regional Centers.

Using the advanced networking and computing system, the CPSP has its own Email server and all staff are provided with the official CPSP Email address having suffix "@cpsp.edu.pk". The Email communication averages 35,000 emails per month.

The CPSP is in the process of commissioning a Management Information Systems database software. This MIS database will be a central storage medium of all data and information. All departments will be able to store and retreive any data through a central database located in the database server at the NOC. Chances of duplication and incomplete/incorrect data being entered into the database will be minimized due to the multiple levels of checks and logical error handling mechanisms. Regional centers will also be able to access and update information centrally using the high speed Internet.

With the establishment of high speed interconnectivity between all centers of the College through the Satellite, the College is initiating the Video Conferencing project. The salient features of this project include:

1) establishment of Video Conferencing studios for delivery of lectures/workshops from one central location to other locations
nationwide. This will enable interactive and virtual classrooms for online lecture delivery.
2) holding meetings, conferences, interviews, etc. in realtime.
