The
Department
The department is situated on the first floor of the main C.P.S.P.
building and has a well equipped laboratory, three excellent seminar
/ conference rooms and a developing Learning Resources Centre.A
fair collection of Histopathology specimens are on display and there
are on going effort to develop it into a Pathology museum. The department
is currently headed by Dr. S. Mohsin Anvery.
The
Objective
The department was established in January, 1981 to meet learning
needs of the postgraduate trainees. It has since, developed the
broader role of promoting Pathology as a specialty, helping to train
personnel at all levels and providing opportunities for C.M.E. and
C.P.D. for Pathologists practicing Histopathology, Haematology,
Microbiology, Chemical Pathology and Immunology.
Activities of the Department
(A)
Courses Workshops and Seminars
1. Basic Medical Sciences (B.M.S) Course for F.C.P.S -1
A five week full time course is conducted twice a year for F.C.P.S-I,
can1idates. It covers basic and applied Anatomy, Physiology and
Pathology. Teachers are invited from all over Pakistan to participate.
The next course is SChedU7ed from 15thAugust to 15thSeptember, 2006.
2. Courses for F.C.P.S - 11
(a). A full time two week course in Histopathology is conducted
every year. Senior Professors add the wealth of their
experience to the course.
(b). Regular annual Courses in Microbiology, Haematnlogy and Chemicalpathology
are being developed and would be in place
shortly.
3. Monthly Scientific Meetings / Seminars
Each major discipline of Pathology holds a scientific meeting /
seminar once a month in the departmentof Pathology C.P.S.P, participated
by the Consultants, Supervisors and Trainees. Presently the schedule
is I.
. Haematology .........................8:30AM first Thursday of
the Month.
. Histopathology.......................9:00 AM second Saturday of
the Month.
. Microbiology...........................8:30AM third Tuesday of
the Month.
. Chemical Pathology.................8:30A.M last Friday of the
Month.
4. Cytotechnology Training
Realising the importance of Cytopathology and dearth of trained
technicians in the field, the department initiated a regular Cytopathology
training programme in July, 1981. So far about hundred (100) Cytotechnologists
have been trained by the department.The training program is being
revised and upgraded.
5. Workshops by foreign experts
The department collaborates with international heath related organizations
like U.N.D.P and W.H.O and has excellent relations with Pathology
departments in Post Graduate Centres abroad. Renowned foreign pathologists
are invited to conduct workshops in their area of expertise. To
date more than thirty five (35) such workshops have been organized
by the department. The next international workshop on Cytopathology
is scheduled to be conducted in September,2006 by a Professor from
the U.K.
(B) Examinations
The department of examinations conducts all the examinations of
the College. However the practical and viva voce sections ofthe
D.C.P.S in clinical pathology and the F.C.P.S-II, exams in Histopathology,
Haematology, Microbiology and Chemical Pathology are generally held
in the Pathology department. Examiners are invited from all over
Pakistan as well as fromU.K and other countries.
(C) Accreditation programme
The department takes part in the programme of onsite inspections
and evaluation of institutions applying for accreditations by the
C.P.S.P for the purpose of training candidates in diplomas and Fellowships
of the College.
Vision for the Future
Improving standard of practice and education of Pathology all
over Pakistan
The strategy devised to achieve this goal has two arms
(a). Continuousdevelopmentof the department of Pathology at the
C.P.S.P.
(b). Co-operation and collaboration with all pathologists and pathology
departments all over Pakistan as well as with centres of
excellence abroad. Thirteen (13)
regional centres of the C.P.S.P spread through out the Country will
provide the
infrastructure to achieve the goal.
