President told the distinguished guest that CPSP has been playing a leading role in establishing and regularly updating Postgraduate Medical Education and specialist practice in Pakistan as well as introducing innovations in medical education, both at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.. CPSP feels rewarded when its innovations are well received and responded by all the stakeholders of healthcare in our Country. CPSP also feels elated because its qualifications are receiving ever greater recognition and acknowledgement in many parts of the World. President said that all prestigious institutions not only invest heavily to remain current in knowledge of various disciplines but also continuously search evidence based technology that could help transfer knowledge, skills and develop behaviors accordingly.
President CPSP invited attention of the guest to the equitable access of healthcare to all sections of population, it means access to similar care to rich and poor and its provision at different levels namely primary, secondary and tertiary facilities in an integrated and comprehensive form. This type of healthcare is the right of people and requires production of competent human resource for health for different cadres of health professionals and different categories of medical and dental professionals in adequate numbers. It is the social responsibility of all stakeholders including institutions, colleges, universities and federal and provincial governments to take appropriate measures to fulfil this requirement of human resource for health, without which the target of providing access to integrated and comprehensive healthcare cannot be achieved.
President CPSP went on to inform that College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistanbeing the premier postgraduate institution of the country is aware of its responsibility and has produced to date 23,140 fellows and 9,433 members. CPSP is also aware of its responsibility that the graduates it produces are competent, caring and considerate. College is making all efforts to ensure the quality of its graduates both in terms of competence and inculcating humane behavior among them.
“College keeps on introducing new fellowship programs in emerging new specialties, and now the number of its fellowship programs has gone to 74. College also produces mid-level specialists through its 20 Membership programs in essential disciplines for district and rural hospitals. It also is offering a Membership program in Medical Education and another in health management. Thus college today contributes 95% of specialist manpower of the country and almost 100% of Armed Forces. The CPSP training network today covers 300 institutions within the country and abroad with over 24000 residents acquiring training under 3746 supervisors.
To ensure that the graduating specialists are competent, College keeps itself abreast of the current trends in educational psychology and evidence-based methods for training and assessment of postgraduate residents
in various specialties. The hallmark of CPSP qualification is the standardization of both its training and examinations. Consequently, a resident receiving training in Karachi or any other part of the country has to acquire same set of competencies and to demonstrate acquisition of those competencies in examinations for the award of CPSP fellowship or membership qualification.
During training, residents as part of training, and formally through mandatory workshops are continuously reminded and coached about their professional and social responsibilities towards the patients and their careers, professional colleagues, other members of healthcare team, and the profession as a whole. The training is now being monitored throughout the tenure through electronic logbook.
A new initiative taken by the College is the introduction of a set of Mini CEX and DOPS for Workplace based assessment during each quarter of training. This initiative is going to timely identify deficient areas in each resident’s training and shall provide constructive feedback to overcome those deficiencies” he said.
Turning to College’s own development, CPSP President told “Let me stress that CPSP successive Councils have developed strong systems which have five pillars.
- Democratic governance:
- Financial self-reliance:
- Academic linkages for evidence-based learning
- Continuous up-gradation:
The achievements of CPSP include earning of a prestigious position in the global community, which is evident by the academic linkages it has developed
with Royal Colleges of U.K, Ireland and Canada, Saudi Commission for Health Specialties and institutions of PGME of Malaysia, China, Singapore, Thailand and other ASEAN countries and the international awards it has fetched”.
Concluding, President CPSP, said that “establishing an institution is a difficult task, but to maintain and ensure its continuous progress is even more difficult. Each successive council of the College has made a significant share in the progress of the College and in translating vision of the college into a tangible reality. The present Council is determined to consolidate the advances already made and to explore more areas which could help in further improving training programs of the College as well as specialist care in the country. The CPSP Council in this regard is presently focusing upon establishing a Model Teaching Hospital in Lahore followed by similar hospitals in other federal and provincial capitals of the country. The second project which is under our active consideration is to establish a Postgraduate Nursing College, as effective specialist care cannot be delivered without trained nursing staff.I am sure we can do it with the support of our fellows, members and other sections of the society who wants this national institution to excel further”.
Before finally thanking the Chief Guest, President congratulated the successful Fellows and Members at this segment of Convocations and also thanked their families and friends for their support to let them concentrate and prepare for attainment of highest degree in Medical Sciences.
He once again thanked Dr Arif Alvi, President Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Chief Guest for taking time from his tight schedule to grace this event.
